On March 27th, something unusual happened in the Henfling-Gymnasium Meiningen. At around 11 a.m., the familiar space of the gym—usually associated with sports and everyday school life—was transformed into a stage for a powerful 90-minute theatre play called: “The Life and Death of Martin Luther King” performed by the American Drama Group.
From the very first scene, the audience was drawn into a world far beyond Germany, into the struggles and hopes of the American Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr., born in Atlanta, Georgia, was not only a political leader but also a symbol of peaceful resistance. He strongly believed in nonviolence and justice and led protests against racial segregation in the United States. His efforts contributed to significant legal changes. However, the play made clear that Martin Luther King Jr. was a man who faced doubts, fears, and enormous personal challenges as well.
One particularly fascinating aspect of the play was the actor portraying Martin Luther King Jr. In a short interview, he explained how demanding it was to take on such an iconic role. It was not only about memorizing lines, but also about understanding a life in depth. He spoke about extensive research, watching original speeches, and working on capturing King’s distinctive voice and presence. Although he shares a similar accent, being from Atlanta himself, he described how challenging it was to truly embody the character.
